Glaives are a staple of 19th century short sidearms. In a time when bayonets were a core part of a soldier's equipment, short sidearms became more specialized, either as tools or as status symbols. the glaive is both. its shape recalls the Roman gladius, a sign of the revived interest in classic aesthetics that came to prominence between the late 1700s and the romantic period. in this video I give a few basic pointers to help navigate the complex world of French glaives and identity them better.
