아침이면 세수를 하시고 동쪽 하늘 해 오르는 곳을 바라보며 양손으로 머리를 뒤로 쓸어내리시며 자손들을 위해 빌어주시던 할머니. 손주 생일이면 미역국과 정한수를 차려놓고 “가방 들고 와 여기 놓거라” 하시며 학생가방까지 생일상 옆에 놓게 하셨습니다. 그 앞에 꿇어앉아 두 손을 싹싹 비비며 공부 잘하고, 아프지 말고, 수명장수하게 해달라고 평생을 빌어주셨습니다. 그때는 늘 보던 모습이라 그 정성을 몰랐습니다. 세월이 지나 돌아보니 무탈하게 살아온 가족의 세월 뒤에는 할머니의 간절한 두 손이 있었나 봅니다. Grandma’s Prayers Raised Us Every morning, Grandma looked toward the rising sun and prayed for her family. On each grandchild’s birthday, she prepared seaweed soup and a bowl of fresh water, placed the child’s school bag beside the birthday table, knelt down, and prayed for health, long life, good studies, and a bright future. Back then, we took those moments for granted.
