Anime becoming mainstream was supposed to be good. -------------------------------------------------- The same stigma that pushed people away from anime had also created a strange kind of community among the people who stayed. When being an anime fan meant being different, finding another fan could feel like finding one of your own. As anime went from niche hobby to global mainstream culture, that old social contract started to disappear. In this video, I look at the strange trade anime fandom made on its way into the mainstream: what we gained, what changed, and why old anime conventions could sometimes feel less like events and more like a room full of people who already knew they belonged together. This isn't an argument that anime was better when people made fun of you for liking it. It's about understanding what existed on the other side of that stigma, and why some of that intimacy is difficult to recreate once a subculture becomes massive. If you grew up with anime before everyone was watching it, you might remember exactly what I'm talking about. -------------------------------------------------- TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 - Nobody should have to hide anime 00:40 - What stigma accidentally created 01:14 - Who gets to belong at a convention? 02:03 - What anime actually lost 03:01 - Would I bring the stigma back? -------------------------------------------------- #anime #animehistory #animefandom #otaku
