Saat ini, kita mungkin menganggap daratan sebagai pusat utama kehidupan di Bumi. Namun, ratusan juta tahun yang lalu, daratan hanyalah hamparan tandus yang sama sekali tidak mampu menopang pertumbuhan tanaman. Kondisinya berbanding terbalik jika kita melihat ke dalam samudra. Di saat daratan masih sunyi dan kosong, kehidupan bawah laut justru mengalami perkembangan yang luar biasa pesat.
