Welcome back to the Road to 300 ELO on Gunsen: The Battle for Toshi Ranbo! The challenge: start from 0 ELO on Board Game Arena and climb all the way to 300, one game at a time, playing every clan across every player count (2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 players). A live gameplay lab to level up, test strategies, and figure out what actually wins games of Gunsen. ▶ EPISODE 2: commentated 3-player gameplay — Unicorn 🦄 vs Dragon 🐉 vs Lion 🦁. Gunsen: The Battle for Toshi Ranbo is a fast area-control and tableau-building (engine builder) board game from Office Dog Games / Asmodee, set in the Legend of the Five Rings (L5R) universe. Seven Great Clans of Rokugan fight for the fortress of Toshi Ranbo; the first to complete 7 objectives (by revealing their gunsen, the war fans) wins. Games run in under an hour, with heavy interaction and almost no downtime. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🦄 THE UNICORN CLAN — speed & cavalry ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Having ridden far beyond Rokugan's borders, the Unicorn came back with foreign tactics, magic and weapons. Playstyle: mobility and tempo. Its mounted archers and cavalry are unmatched, and the sheer speed with which it moves forces can win the game outright — outflanking rivals, raining arrows from afar, and charging home behind the legendary Battle Maidens. Its holdings in the Burning Sands grant an economic and equipment edge. The clan to grab objectives across the map before anyone can react. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🐉 THE DRAGON CLAN — elite & unconventional ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Tattooed monks and dual-wielding warriors, both grounded and mystical. Playstyle: quality over quantity. Its armies are smaller but deploy faster than any other clan, and it draws strength from shrines, monasteries and close ties to the common people. Crucially, the Dragon can bend the game's rules — ignoring some of the column-building constraints everyone else must follow — for a more flexible engine. With the Champion's gift of prophecy, its troops are always in the right place at the right time. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🦁 THE LION CLAN — the war machine ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ The Lion is warfare itself: the largest standing army in Rokugan, the sharpest tacticians and the most courageous soldiers. Its founder Akodo "One-Eye" wrote both the samurai code and the treatise that shaped Rokugani military strategy for centuries. Playstyle: board presence and tactical dominance. Secure supply lines and rich holdings (the City of the Rich Frog) let the Lion field the most troops and hold the widest front line. When the Lion commits, it commits hard. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ♟ WHAT MAKES A 3-PLAYER GAME DIFFERENT ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ At 3 players, Gunsen uses the smaller board (the same one as 2-player), so the map is tight and the central Toshi Ranbo fortress is even more contested. It's all about the triangle: don't become the clan the other two gang up on, keep an eye on BOTH rivals' achievement counts, and remember that seizing Toshi Ranbo can score up to 3 achievements in a single turn — so a patient third clan can swoop in and win while the other two trade blows. Speed (Unicorn), efficiency (Dragon) and mass (Lion) pulling in three directions on a small map = constant tension.
