An Indian Express investigation raises questions over Delhi Police’s Facial Recognition System (FRS) identification of people allegedly linked to serious criminal cases during the Jantar Mantar student protests. Delhi Police told the Supreme Court that its FRS identified 2,873 people with criminal records, including 205 linked to cases involving murder, rape, POCSO and attempted murder. However, an examination of police, prison and court records by The Indian Express found that at least 25 of those people were reportedly in jail during the protest dates and could not have been present at Jantar Mantar. The investigation looks at how FRS identification works, the need for field verification, and the apparent discrepancies between facial-recognition results and jail records. The report also examines the case of Yogesh alias Raju, whom police records reportedly place in jail while the FRS allegedly identified him at the protest.
