Michael Jordan learned quickly that pro basketball had no interest in clearing a runway just because Chicago believed it found a savior. One night after absorbing a violent collision from Washington's Jeff Ruland in his debut, Jordan led the Chicago Bulls into Wisconsin on October 27, 1984, taking on the Milwaukee Bucks in his first regular-season road test. The Bulls built a 51-35 advantage behind 29 points and 8 rebounds from Orlando Woolridge, but Chicago left the door open with 15 missed free throws. Former DePaul star Terry Cummings took command late, scoring 16 of Milwaukee's final 18 points on his way to 34 on the night, knocking down tougher shot after tougher shot against an overwhelmed Chicago defense. Jordan finished with 21 points, keeping the Bulls within striking distance until the final seconds. With Chicago trailing late, Bucks head coach Don Nelson threw a double-team at the inbounds pass, only for Jordan to elevate directly through the trap. Jordan created clean separation on the perimeter, but his 15-foot jumper at the buzzer missed everything as the Milwaukee Bucks sealed a 108-106 victory over the Chicago Bulls.
