I came across this song through a friend who loved the series and sang it every time we went to karaoke. He wasn't a good singer, but something in that clumsy performance still burned. Some songs carry their own heat, no matter who sings them. The vocal is female, but the song looks at a boy. It says I like you for not giving up, I like you for muttering that you won't lose to today. It doesn't pull him forward — it stands behind him. The line about staying close when he wants to cry comes right before the chorus. There was a time when a single line like that was enough to move me. I was going through a rough stretch when I recorded this. At some point I looked at my own eyes in the mirror and thought they were still a boy's eyes. The arrangement holds up remarkably well. It's thirty years old and still sounds more forward-looking than most of what comes out now. The brass was played by Eric Miyashiro. That tells you how much care went into a single anime opening. The guitar solo in the middle is the same story. I assumed it was a classical guitar, but it's a steel-string. Playing like that on steel strings is even more impressive. I've never seen anyone talk about this part, but every time I hear Breeze from Slayers TRY, I feel it's the same player. I'm almost certain. Playing leaves fingerprints. There are no credits, so there's no way to confirm it, but that's what my ear tells me. It's a short passage that changes the whole impression of the song without ever overpowering the vocal. That's the hardest thing to do. So I finally recorded a song I had carried around for years. I didn't follow the clean high register of the original.
