BREAKING: PETER OBI, OLUSEGUN OBASANJO AND GOODLUCK JONATHAN SPEAK ON THE FUTURE OF NIGERIA'S DEMOCRACY! POLITICAL PARTIES, JUDICIARY, ELECTORAL CREDIBILITY AND AFRICA'S DEMOCRATIC CRISIS TAKE CENTRE STAGE AT THE 2026 GOODLUCK JONATHAN FOUNDATION DEMOCRACY DIALOGUE!
Three prominent Nigerian political figures, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and Peter Obi, address major concerns about democratic institutions, political leadership, electoral integrity and the future of governance across Africa.
The 5th Annual Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue, held on August 11, 2026, at the Sir Ahmadu Bello International Conference Centre in Bauchi State, examined the theme: “Beyond Elections: Can Political Parties and the Judiciary Save African Democracy?”
Peter Obi delivered a goodwill message questioning the declining values of political leadership, weaknesses in democratic institutions and problems affecting electoral credibility. His remarks highlighted the importance of accountability, responsible governance and restoring public confidence in Nigeria's democratic system.
Olusegun Obasanjo, who chaired the dialogue, examined the limitations of Western democratic models inherited by African countries.
He argued for democratic systems that reflect African realities, values and historical experiences while addressing political exclusion, institutional weaknesses and governance challenges.
Goodluck Jonathan, founder of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, emphasised the importance of sustaining strong democratic institutions beyond election periods. His contributions focused on political accountability, credible governance and the long-term survival of democracy across Africa.
Professor Karuti Kanyinga delivered the keynote address, “The Hollowing Out of African Democracy,” examining threats to democratic institutions and political participation.
The discussions also addressed winner-takes-all politics, internal democracy within political parties, judicial independence, electoral disputes, constitutionalism, political intolerance, weak opposition structures, declining public trust and the responsibilities of citizens.
Building on the previous dialogue, “Why Democracies Die,” the 2026 gathering brought together African statesmen, jurists, scholars, political leaders and civil society representatives to consider how democratic institutions can remain effective between elections.
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, the discussions raise important questions about INEC, judicial accountability, electoral reforms, political party credibility and the role of independent institutions in protecting democratic governance.
Can African democracy survive without strong political parties and an independent judiciary? What reforms are needed to restore public confidence in elections?
Watch the major contributions from Peter Obi, Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan at the 2026 Democracy Dialogue in Bauchi.
