What did the sky look like 400 million years ago, long before humans, cities, or even dinosaurs existed? During the Devonian Period, Earth was entering a remarkable chapter of its geological history. The continents occupied very different positions, vast oceans covered much of the planet, early forests were spreading across land, and the atmosphere and climate were unlike anything experienced by modern civilization.
In this full documentary, we travel back to the Devonian to reconstruct the ancient sky above prehistoric Earth. We explore how the changing position of the continents, atmospheric composition, volcanic activity, oceans, clouds, and the developing biosphere influenced the world beneath the sky. We also examine the spectacular ecosystems that existed at a time when vertebrates were beginning to expand onto land and enormous prehistoric fish dominated ancient seas.
There were no modern birds crossing the atmosphere and no familiar landscapes beneath the clouds. Instead, the horizon would have revealed a radically different planet—one shaped by ancient oceans, primitive forests, shifting continents, and ecosystems that existed hundreds of millions of years before humanity.
Join us on a journey into the Devonian world and discover how scientists use geology, paleontology, atmospheric research, and astronomical models to reconstruct what Earth may have looked like 400 million years ago.
