Alex Eala Has Found Her Best Form Again. Should Shnaider Be Worried?

Alex Eala vs Diana Shnaider is back on in the Tokyo quarterfinals, just seven days after Shnaider beat her 7-5, 6-4 in Ningbo. Here's what changed. On Wednesday at the Toray Pan Pacific Open, the No. 8 seed Eala dropped the first set to world No. 38 Talia Gibson, then won nine straight games to close it out 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Nine aces. Two double faults. Six breaks of serve. And the detail nobody reported: both of the service games she lost came in the first set. Across sets two and three, she was not broken once. Eala called the turnaround "a gradual increase of level." This video shows you exactly which level moved. We break down the number that decided Tokyo, why the Ningbo loss was closer than the scoreline suggests, and why a rebuilt second serve is specifically bad news against a left-handed opponent. Then we put a line on the board: hold above 80% of service games and Shnaider has to win the hard way. The matchup: Shnaider is the No. 3 seed in Tokyo and world No. 13, a French Open semifinalist in 2026 with five career WTA titles, into her eighth quarterfinal of the year and her third straight of the Asian swing after Wuhan and Ningbo. Eala is world No. 19, back to a career-high No. 18 in the live rankings on 2,289 points, in her sixth tour-level quarterfinal of 2026. And one thing the previews are missing: these two have met before. Back in 2019, in the juniors, Eala beat Shnaider 6-1, 6-3 in the third round in Osaka. Who takes it?
