Every formation is set to hold: 360,000 Gondor infantry, 120,000 Gondorians, 120,000 Elven swordsmen in four blocks, 60,000 archers and 50 catapults, built in layers so that whatever breaks the outer edge meets another edge inside it. Ten Gandalfs and ten Legolases stand inside those layers. Behind the hordes, Sauron waits with his guard — 100,000 Uruk-hai and a thousand crossbowmen. He does not come forward. He does not have to. In the story, the Dark Lord could not be destroyed while the Ring endured, and the last time Men and Elves stood against him, it took more than an army to end it. So the question is not only whether Gondor survives three million orcs. It is what happens if it does — and finds one figure left standing at the far end of the field.
