Shinano: The Largest Warship Ever Sunk by a Submarine She was built on the hull of a Yamato-class battleship and turned into the largest aircraft carrier in the world, a 72,000-ton giant Japan hoped would change the war. Ten days after she was commissioned, four torpedoes from one American submarine sent her to the bottom. On November 29, 1944, USS Archerfish, commanded by Joseph Enright, a man who had almost lost his career after a failed first patrol, chased Shinano through the night, fired six torpedoes, and made four hits. Of the 2,515 men aboard, 1,435 never came home. This documentary shows how a rushed, unfinished ship with an untrained crew met a submarine captain who broke the rules at exactly the right moment, in a feat no submarine in any navy has matched since.
