First Piano Lesson for Adults | How to Use the Circle of Fifths How do you start learning the piano as an adult? Have you heard of the circle of fifths, and do you know how to use it to help you? This week: your first piano lesson as an adult, built for playing and singing, and how to use the circle of fifths to master music theory. piano lessons for beginners • first piano lesson • circle of fifths • C F G chords • find notes on piano • adult piano • play and sing Three quarters of piano students want to play and sing, so this first lesson is a comping lesson: music theory, technique, and a song. Theory: number your fingers one through five. Find D, the white key between the two black keys, and count the alphabet up and down from it. Every day, call out letter names at random and play four of each, using your left hand as much as your right. Technique: chords are built in thirds. Keep the C E G hand shape and move it to F and G, in four places, three or four minutes a day. For agility, play the C and G pentascales (not the pentatonic scale), slow and even. Song: C, F, and G are the I, IV, and V chords in C. Amazing Grace, Louie Louie, Hound Dog, and Brown Eyed Girl all work with them. Transpose a song to C on Ultimate Guitar and play one chord per beat. Circle of fifths displays the sharp keys clockwise, flat keys counterclockwise, relative minors inside, plus the order of sharps and flats. When you want to practice or know the chords in a certain key, put your finger on that key: the chord clockwise is the V and the chord counterclockwise is the IV. Add their relative minors inside the circle for the six chords in most songs in that key. Want the diagram?
