The Real Reason the Mafia Created “The Commission”

The Real Reason the Mafia Created “The Commission” In 1931, after years of bloodshed and internal warfare, America’s Mafia underwent a transformation that would change organized crime forever. But why was “The Commission” created? This documentary explores the real historical reasons behind the creation of the Mafia Commission and the power structure that emerged after the Castellammarese War. We follow the rise of Lucky Luciano, the deaths of Joe Masseria and Salvatore Maranzano, and the creation of a system designed to prevent powerful Mafia families from destroying each other. From New York’s violent underworld of the 1930s to the Apalachin meeting in 1957, Joseph Valachi’s testimony in 1963, and the historic Mafia Commission Trial in the 1980s, this story reveals how cooperation, territory, money, and power shaped the American Mafia. In this episode, we examine: • The Castellammarese War of 1930–1931 • Joe Masseria and Salvatore Maranzano • Lucky Luciano’s rise to power • The creation of the Commission • The Five Families of New York • How Mafia disputes were controlled • The Apalachin meeting of 1957 • Joseph Valachi and his 1963 testimony • The FBI’s growing war against organized crime • RICO and the Mafia Commission Trial • Why the Commission ultimately became a target for federal prosecutors The Commission was not simply created to make the Mafia stronger. It was designed to prevent another devastating war between rival crime families—and to create a system where powerful bosses could negotiate, protect their interests, and maintain control. But the same structure that helped organize the Mafia eventually gave law enforcement a way to attack the organization at its highest level. This is the real story behind one of the most powerful—and misunderstood—institutions in American organized crime history.
