Tourists travelling to Sohra and Dawki could soon have to switch to local tourist taxis, with the state government exploring a designated pick-up point at Kyrdemkhla to expand opportunities for local operators. A three-acre plot at Kyrdemkhla was inspected on Tuesday by Tourism Department Special Secretary K. L. Nongbri, representatives of the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA) and members of the Kyrdemkhla Dorbar Shnong. The proposal follows discussions chaired by Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Transport Sniawbhalang Dhar, after tourist taxi operators sought a system under which vehicles from outside Meghalaya would drop visitors at designated points for onward travel in local taxis. Talking to reporters after the site inspection, Nongbri said he would submit the inspection report to the government for consideration. The Tourism Department will also prepare the proposed facility’s plan, design and cost estimate before the government takes a final decision. AKMTTA president Ricaldison Dohling said Kyrdemkhla was the first site identified under the initiative’s initial phase, with more pick-up points likely to be considered in the future.
