He kept asking God to send someone else. God came Himself.
Moses sees an Egyptian beating one of his own people. He strikes the man down, hides him in the sand, and escapes into Midian. Years later, tending sheep, he sees a bush that burns without burning up, and God calls from the fire: "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground." (Exodus 3:5) God is sending him back to Pharaoh. Moses asks, "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?" (Exodus 3:11) God answers, "I will surely be with you," (Exodus 3:12) and gives His name, "I AM WHO I AM." (Exodus 3:14) After every sign, Moses pleads, "Please, Lord, send someone else." (Exodus 4:13) God gives him Aaron, and Moses goes. Then the song turns the mirror on us with a fictional funeral lunch, not a real funeral, family or pastor, where an old friend asks about Jesus and the narrator points him toward the pastor. Then Jesus, the Word made flesh, does not send someone else but comes Himself, dies in the narrator's place, and rises, until the narrator finally says it out loud: Jesus is alive.

Lyrics
[Intro]
Fire in the branches.
The branches stay.
“Moses, Moses!”
“Here I am,”
[Verse 1]
The boy from the basket grows up, sees a beating.
One of his people beneath an Egyptian.
Looks left. Looks right. Leaves a man in the sand.
Next day, a witness. Now blood on his hands.
The king wants him dead. He escapes into Midian.
Years pass. Sheep graze. A staff is his living.
Then fire in a bush, but the branches remain.
He turns from the flock when he hears his own name.
“Take off your sandals,
for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”
Bare soles settle. His face turns down.
The God of his fathers has heard every sound
Of the slaves under lashes, the cries under crowns.
The voice in the fire is sending him back.
Back to the throne. Back over his tracks.
“Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh
and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
“I will surely be with you,”
[Verse 2]
What name do I give them? What words do I bring?
“I AM WHO I AM.”
A shepherd stands barefoot before the same King
Who remembers the fathers, remembers their sons.
The brick yards keep working. The One who hears comes.
“What is that in your hand?”
“A staff,”
“Throw it on the ground,”
Wood bends. Scales slide. He jumps back fast.
Hand out. Tail caught. He's holding a staff.
Hand in his cloak, comes out white as snow.
Back in. Back out. Skin whole.
Then Moses speaks.
Slow words. Low breath.
All those signs.
One answer left.
[Chorus]
“Please, Lord, send someone else.”
Someone else.
“Please, Lord, send someone else.”
Someone else.
[Bridge]
Funeral lunch.
My oldest friend holds his father's hat.
He asks me why I still believe in Jesus.
I point him toward the pastor.
The hat turns slowly in his hands.
[Verse 3]
The LORD's anger burns at the words Moses brings.
Still, Aaron is coming. His brother can speak.
God promises help for the mouths of them both.
Moses takes up the staff and he goes.
Wife and sons on a donkey. The wilderness road.
The mouth that said no has a brother to hold
The words God will give him. Sand underfoot.
The throne he ran from is the way he must look.
[Verse 4]
“The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.”
Jesus comes near to the mouths that have shut.
“Here I am, I have come to do Your will.”
He walks toward the hands that will hammer the steel.
The hands that made mouths take the nails in His flesh.
The Son gives His body. His own blood is shed.
My fear. My refusal. The guilt I have carried.
He bears it. Breath leaves Him. His body is buried.
Then dawn at the tomb. He is risen indeed.
The mouth that fell silent is speaking His peace.
Jesus, I trust You. You died in my place.
You rose. You still send us. You give us Your grace.
“And surely I am with you always,
even to the end of the age.”
[Final Chorus]
You came Yourself.
You came Yourself.
I asked for someone else.
You came Yourself.
“Jesus is alive.”
