Seed stitch is one of the first textures every knitter should learn, and it only uses knits and purls. In this first episode of our Knitting Stitch Patterns series, we knit four seed stitch variations one above the other in a single swatch: classic seed stitch, a scattered seed with purled wrong-side rows, a broken rib, and double seed stitch (US moss stitch). The rule is simple once you can read your knitting: on shifting rows, knit the purls and purl the knits. (In Turkish this stitch is called "pirinç örgü," or rice stitch.) Materials Worsted / medium-weight yarn (yellow in the video; acrylic or wool blend) A pair of straight knitting needles, about 4–5 mm (US 6–8) Scissors Pattern Abbreviations: CO = cast on, k = knit, p = purl, st(s) = stitch(es), RS = right side, WS = wrong side, rep = repeat. All four variations are worked over an odd number of stitches. The video uses 19 stitches, with the variations worked one after another in the same swatch. CO 19 sts. Variation 1 – Classic seed stitch Every row: k1, *p1, k1*; rep from * to end. Each knit stitch is purled on the next row and each purl stitch is knitted (knit the purls, purl the knits). Work about 10–12 rows. Variation 2 – Seed on RS, purl WS (scattered seed, grows faster) Row 1 (RS): k1, *p1, k1*; rep from * to end. Row 2 (WS): Purl all sts. Row 3 (RS): p1, *k1, p1*; rep from * to end. Row 4 (WS): Purl all sts. Rep Rows 1–4 (about 8 rows shown). Variation 3 – Broken rib (1x1 rib on RS, purl WS) Row 1 (RS): k1, *p1, k1*; rep from * to end. Do not shift; knit the knits and purl the purls. Row 2 (WS): Purl all sts. Rep Rows 1–2 (about 6 rows shown). This makes vertical lines like Selanik stitch, and the fabric grows about as fast as stockinette. Variation 4 – Double seed stitch (US moss stitch) Row 1 (RS): k1, *p1, k1*; rep from * to end. Row 2 (WS): p1, *k1, p1*; rep from * to end (work the sts as they appear, like ribbing). Row 3 (RS): p1, *k1, p1*; rep from * to end (shift: knit the purls, purl the knits). Row 4 (WS): k1, *p1, k1*; rep from * to end (work the sts as they appear). Rep Rows 1–4. The stitches shift every two rows, which gives larger, more defined bumps, and the fabric looks the same on both sides. Note: The exact first stitch of each row may differ slightly from the video. What matters is the rule: on shifting rows, knit the purls and purl the knits; on non-shifting rows, knit the knits and purl the purls. These stitches work well for blankets, baby vests, cardigans, sweaters, scarves, hats, and edge bands. You can also use them in place of ribbing or as a background for embroidery.
