A couple of weeks ago my daughter asked me what I wanted for my birthday, and I sat there looking at her over my coffee with nothing to say. It turns out nobody keeps their preferences on a shelf. You build an answer in the moment somebody asks, out of whatever your memory hands you. So it isn't that I didn’t want anything. It's that I've had no practice wanting. School just started here which means I have a tad more time than I've had the last few months. So I’m taking one minute of the day to ask myself: what would I want right now if somebody asked me? Tell me something you want in the comments. Not a goal, not something you should want. Something you'd actually like today. If you've had nothing to say when someone asked what you wanted, subscribe. You’re who I make these for. Research referenced: Slovic, P. (1995). The construction of preference. American Psychologist. Jack, D. C. (1991). Silencing the Self: Women and Depression.
