When was the last time someone asked you, “How are you really doing?”
Not how is work.
Not how are the children.
Not how is business.
Just: How are you?
In this episode of Second Act Naija, we talk about something many men experience but rarely discuss openly:
The silent loneliness of successful men.
A man may have had a distinguished career, built a successful business, raised a family, earned respect and achieved many of the things society associates with success.
And still feel alone.
For decades, work gives many men structure, relationships, conversation and somewhere important to go every morning.
Then retirement comes.
The children move away.
A spouse may spend long periods abroad.
The phone rings less often.
The house becomes quieter.
And without necessarily recognising what is happening, loneliness begins to move in.
This conversation is about what happens next.
We look at why men often find it difficult to acknowledge loneliness, why professional contacts are not always the same as genuine friendships, and why rebuilding community must become part of preparing for the second half of life.
I also share the contrasting stories of two retired men.
One waits for people to come to him and watches his world gradually become smaller.
The other makes a simple decision: every week, he creates time for friendship and conversation.
His circumstances do not change.
His connections do.
That is the power of community.
And it is one of the reasons we will soon be introducing Second Act Connect — small gatherings designed to bring people together to talk, share experiences, build friendships and enjoy good company.
Because no one should have to navigate the second half of life alone.
THIS WEEK'S SECOND ACT CHALLENGE
Reconnect with one person.
Call an old friend.
Visit a former colleague.
Invite someone for a drink.
Take a walk with a neighbour.
Or simply ask someone:
“How are you really doing?”
Don't wait for people to find you.
Take the first step.
If you take part in this week's challenge, I'd love to hear what happened. Share your experience in the comments.
Because loneliness does not disappear simply because time passes.
It begins to disappear when people connect.
Your first act gave you experience.
Your second act can give you significance.
