The story of Abigail and Nabal reveals a powerful spiritual picture. Abigail recognized who David was. She knew that David was the anointed king, and she submitted herself to him. Yet as long as Nabal was alive, Abigail could not be David’s wife. In the same way, there is a “first husband” that must die before we can be united with Christ. Our first husband is our old nature, our sinful nature, the old man that rules our life apart from God. As long as the old nature remains on the throne, there can be no complete union with Christ. In Romans 7, it says that we became dead to the law through the body of Christ, so that we should belong to Another, even to Christ. The old husband must die. The old nature must die. The old life must die. So that Christ may live in us. This is not merely turning over a new leaf. It is death to self and surrender to the One who has the right to reign. “For I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.” Galatians 2:20 May this message challenge us to examine whether the old man is still ruling, or whether Christ truly has His place in our lives.
