They were larger than life. They had the guitars, the cars, the money, the fame, the beautiful women and thousands of screaming fans. We wanted to BE them. But now, as I get older and watch many of those same rock legends enter their 70s and 80s, I'm beginning to see something very differently. *Maybe the rock-star life we idolized wasn't something we should have wanted at all.* Behind the fame were broken relationships, addiction, loneliness, financial problems, years away from family and the incredible pressure of trying to remain the person everyone remembers from your prime. And then comes perhaps the cruelest part: *Getting old in public.* We're watching some legendary performers continue taking the stage long after their physical abilities have begun to decline. Some still deliver incredible performances. Others struggle. Every bad note, awkward movement and difficult night can be recorded on a phone and uploaded for millions of people to dissect. For some of these artists, growing old has begun to feel like one enormous public humiliation ritual. And yet they keep going. Why? Is it money? Is it ego? Is the stage the only place they still feel truly alive? Or after spending an entire lifetime being a rock star, do you eventually reach a point where you simply don't know how to be anything else? On this foggy early morning Florida Walk & Talk, I'm marching forward with a little more clarity about *fame, aging rock stars, classic rock, the music business and the lives we once dreamed about having.* Maybe success isn't dying with a guitar around your neck under the stage lights. Maybe success is knowing when you've already won. And maybe some of the people we thought had everything actually paid a price most of us would never want to pay. *Did you have a rock star on your bedroom wall growing up?
