This is a video of the incredible play by Bruins goaltender Gerry Cheevers during the 1978 Stanley Cup playoffs against Philadelphia in the Semi-Finals and Montreal in the Finals. The clips are from a couple of Flyers broadcasts, and CBC broadcasts of the Final vs. the Canadiens, with such legendary play-by-play announcers as Don Earle, Gene Hart, Danny Gallivan, and Dan Kelly, and commentary from Dick Irvin and Chico Resch, among others. Cheevers, on the back nine of his career after winning Cups in Boston in 1970 and 1972, made great save after great save in the postseason, almost willing his team to the title. Yes, the dynastic Canadiens, the better team, won the Cup. But the grit and never-quit of Don Cherry's Lunch Pail AC, particularly Cheevers and defenseman Brad Park, who was as outstanding as Cheevers, was something to admire. (In other words, don't be the "Why are we celebrating this team if it didn't win the championship?" guy.) Cheevers vs. Dryden is even in general. Park and Larry Robinson is even in general. I think the Canadiens just had a touch more touch and depth at forward, their attack led by Guy Lafleur. That said, the way Bruins captain Wayne Cashman, Stan Jonathan, Don Marcotte, Peter McNab, Rick Middleton, Terry O'Reilly, etc., just grinded out every shift was awesome ... Hadn't heard much Gallivan until watching these games - another in a long line of terrific hockey PxP guys. Box scores of semifinals and finals in comments.
