Bamboo might just be the most misunderstood plant by many gardeners. I see alarmist comments all the time on garden groups and communities, so I made this video to help remedy these misconceptions.
Bamboo will not destroy your house, or take over your yard (and your neighbors), just as long as it is "clumping" bamboo and not "running" bamboo. This is very easy to distinguish by the variety of bamboo, and there is no inbetween -- it is either clumping or running. If you want your bamboo to stay in a 1 metre "clump" all you have to do is buy the clumping varieties.
Bamboo is great! Here are the main reasons why:
1. Tropical lush look; Evergreen and makes a wonderful privacy hedge
2. Grows very fast and responds quickly to fertilizer
3. Easy to care for and trim; trimming doesn't harm the plant even if done heavily
4. Leaves make a nice mulch and dried out removed culms can be used for other purposes around the garden (e.g. stakes and support poles).
5. Can take full sun in the hottest climates like Phoenix Arizona.
My zone is 9b and I live outside Phoenix AZ. Our temperatures range from 25F to 120F. Several clumping bamboo varieties do well down to zone 8.
Check out your local nurseries and ask for "clumping bamboo," or if you are in the USA and want to order online to get rarer clumping varieties, I've found this company to be high quality:
