Most people assume Americans once sounded British, then gradually developed a new accent after the American Revolution.
But the real story is far more complicated.
The “British accent” most people recognize today was itself still evolving in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. At the same time, English speakers in colonial America were mixing dialects brought from England, Scotland, and Ireland, creating new regional patterns long before the United States became independent.
In this documentary, we trace how migration, class, education, westward expansion, immigration, social prestige, and institutions reshaped English on both sides of the Atlantic.
And one tiny detail changes the story almost completely: the letter R.
Why did many Americans continue pronouncing the R in words like “car,” “hard,” and “farm,” while prestigious southern British speech gradually stopped doing so?
Did Americans really lose their British accent?
Or have we been asking the wrong question all along?
This is the hidden history of how American and British English came to sound so different.
