Learning God’s Word Through Praise 〈ONE STEP CLOSER TO SODOM〉 Genesis 13:5–13 · 14:1–24 Abraham and Lot began their journey together, but their eyes were fixed on different things. Abraham trusted God and surrendered his right to choose first. He remained before the Lord, building an altar and depending on God’s promise. Lot looked toward the fertile plains near Sodom. The land was beautiful, prosperous, and pleasing to his eyes. At first, he only looked toward Sodom. Then he pitched his tents near the city. Little by little, he moved closer until Sodom became the place where he lived. Lot did not fall into the sinful city in a single moment. He was slowly drawn toward it—one choice, one step, and one day at a time. Near Sodom. Closer to Sodom. In Sodom. When war came, Lot was captured and lost everything. Abraham risked his life to rescue him, yet Lot returned to Sodom once again. He had been taken out of Sodom, but Sodom had not been taken out of his heart. One man remained in the presence of God. The other was slowly pulled toward a city filled with sin. Before Abraham’s eyes stood an altar to God. Before Lot’s eyes stood the gates of Sodom. They began on the same road, but the direction of their hearts led them to very different places. What are our eyes fixed on today?
