It’s right around 4:20 PM, and the ground-floor lobby of BELTEI is pure, noisy chaos. The afternoon bell just rang, and everyone has spilled out into the lobby, dragging backpacks that honestly look heavier than the kids wearing them. A bunch of bright lime-green and blue plastic chairs are scattered across the tiled floor, but barely anyone is sitting still. Kids in their light blue uniform shirts and school lanyards are bouncing around, high on end-of-the-day energy, comparing pencil cases, and playing tag around the pillars. You've got the teachers and aunties in the back trying their best to keep order, keeping an eye on the front doors while parents peek in from outside. Out on the street, the honking is already starting as Scoopies, Waves, and PassApps fight for parking space near the curb. Every few seconds, someone hears their name shouted over the noise, grabs their pink or blue backpack off a chair, and dashes toward the glass doors with a huge grin. They made it through another full day of morning Khmer and afternoon English. Now, the only mission left is begging mom or dad for a 2,000-riel cup of crushed-ice milo or some fried meatballs at the pushcart outside before heading home.
