SYNOPSIS
Revelation 17 and 18 reveal a conflict between two cities and two rival allegiances. Babylon represents humanity’s attempt to build life for its own glory—an attractive but corrupt system shaped by pride, self-rule, wealth, power and worship directed away from God. In contrast, the New Jerusalem is the city of God, where redeemed people live with Him and for His glory.
The imagery of the scarlet woman and the beast can feel complex, but the central message is clear: every power that opposes Christ is temporary, Babylon will fall, and the Lamb will conquer because He is Lord of lords and King of kings. God remains sovereign even when worldly systems appear dominant.
The call to God’s people is not to withdraw from the world, but to come out of Babylon’s way of thinking. Christians are citizens of another Kingdom, called to live as salt and light without allowing success, money, possessions, relationships, sport, ministry or personal reputation to take God’s rightful place in the heart.
Sin often looks attractive while hiding its consequences, but Jesus openly tells us the truth and offers freedom. At the cross He carried the debt we could never repay. Revelation therefore asks a searching question: which city shapes our values, priorities, security and worship? Holy Spirit invites us to surrender every remaining allegiance and be faithful to the Lamb.
🔥 KEY TAKEAWAYS
➡️ Revelation’s central hope is that Jesus wins: every rebellious power will end, but the Lamb reigns as Lord of lords and King of kings.
➡️ Babylon is more than a location; it represents a proud, self-centred way of life that seeks glory, security and significance apart from God.
➡️ God calls His people to live in the world without being shaped by it—faithful citizens of His Kingdom whose worship belongs to Him alone.
🙏 A QUESTION TO CONSIDER
What would hurt you most to lose, and could that reveal something that has begun to occupy the place in your heart that belongs to Jesus?
Ask the Holy Spirit to show you where Babylon’s values have influenced your priorities. Surrender that area to Christ and choose one practical way to live this week as a citizen of His Kingdom.
