It’s the middle of the night, in the final hours before Jesus's crucifixion. The high priest stands up in a chaotic courtroom full of fabricated, contradictory accusations and demands: "Answerest thou nothing? What is it which these witness against thee?"
Jesus is practically invited by the most powerful man in the room to defend Himself and set the record straight. Yet, Matthew records His response in four simple words: "But Jesus held his peace."
This was not a isolated response under pressure; it was a deliberate, consistent pattern spanning His entire public ministry. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus was called a glutton, a drunkard, demon-possessed, and even declared insane by His own family. Yet, not once did He pause to manage His image, correct a rumor, or defend His public standing.
What makes His silence even more astonishing is what He did for others:
🛡️ He fiercely defended a woman caught in adultery against a stoning mob.
🌹 He permanently protected Mary's legacy when she was criticized for her costly act of devotion.
👑 He publicly honored John the Baptist’s credibility to a skeptical crowd.
Why would a man who fought so passionately for everyone else’s reputation completely refuse to fight for His own? In this video, we explore the deep theological distinction between Identity and Reputation:
⚖️ The Trial of False Witnesses: How Jesus responded to fabricated accusations and garbled claims with absolute composure.
🗣️ Cataloging the Insults: Why Jesus ignored accusations of being demon-possessed, insane, or a winebibber.
🛡️ Defending Others vs. Defending Himself: Why His silence was a deliberate choice applied strictly to Himself, not passivity or indifference.
💡 The Trap of Impression Management: What modern social psychology reveals about our exhausting obsession with controlling what others think of us.
📜 The Act of Transfer (Paradidomi): How Jesus "committed himself to him that judgeth righteously" (1 Peter 2:23) and left the ultimate verdict in God’s hands.
⚓ Unshakeable Identity: How knowing His Father’s declaration over Him freed Jesus from needing public approval. If you are exhausting your life constantly managing the gap between who you are and what people say about you, this message offers a transformative path toward true peace.
