Mastodon shares the inspiration behind the cover art for their new album Marrow Deep, created by longtime collaborator Paul Romano.
The album draws inspiration from the Three Fates of Greek mythology, traditionally known as Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos. Together, the three sisters are associated with the thread of life and the course of human destiny, fitting into the album’s themes surrounding life, loss and moving forward.
Drummer Brann Dailor introduced the Three Fates as an overarching theme for Marrow Deep. Troy Sanders has also spoken about how the concept connects with the band’s past, present and future, while noting the coincidence of Mastodon itself having three core members in Sanders, Dailor and Bill Kelliher.
The concept extends into Paul Romano’s detailed cover artwork. After the black-and-white artwork of Hushed and Grim, Mastodon wanted to move in a much more colorful direction. Romano and Dailor worked together on the color palette before Romano developed the final painting, filled with details and Easter eggs to discover.
The Three Fates theme continues throughout the album, which closes with a track titled “The Three Fates.”
Marrow Deep is out now via Loma Vista Recordings.
