Everything is changing. So what are you???
When we begin to observe our thoughts, emotions, feelings and bodily sensations through mindfulness, something remarkable becomes clear: everything is constantly moving.
Thoughts appear and disappear.
Emotions rise and fall.
Sensations build, change and fade.
Our experience is less like a solid object and more like a river, a waterfall or a constantly changing weather system.
In this video, I explore three profound insights that can emerge through mindfulness practice:
1. Everything changes.
Our thoughts, emotions, sensations and circumstances are constantly coming and going. Nothing stays fixed.
2. I am not the things I experience.
If a thought can appear and disappear, can I really be that thought? If an emotion rises and falls, can I really be that emotion? Through mindful awareness, we begin to question the assumption that we are the changing contents of our experience.
3. Suffering comes from trying to hold on.
We suffer when we try to make pleasant experiences stay, push unpleasant experiences away, or turn constantly changing experiences into something solid and permanent.
Life is like the weather. Sometimes it's beautiful. Sometimes it's painful. Sometimes it's calm, sometimes it's chaotic. But we cannot control it all—and we certainly can't grab hold of a cloud and make it stay.
Mindfulness helps us live more in harmony with the changing nature of experience, rather than constantly trying to control it.
This is where the deeper freedom begins.
