This one year old buck is the son of Susie, the matriarch of the herd. He's come to trust me because for the last year he's seen me hanging out with his mom, scratching her, and generally being a trustworthy human. I've scratched his head before, but he was always a bit nervous about it, and thrashed about as I was scratching, as if I was another buck banging against his antlers. Today I saw him off in the trees trying to scratch his head on a tree branch. He seemed a bit frustrated, so I thought I'd lend a hand. This was the first time he really appreciated it, understood how nice it was, and was disappointed when I left. He's a sweetie. I should add that I'm very careful with his antlers. They are small, but as solid as two pieces of oak. If he were to turn his head too sharply with my arm caught in the middle, that could be serious. It's nice at this point, when he still has velvet on his antlers. On the surface, they are very soft, but imagine solid rounded pieces of oak covered in velvet – both soft and hard.
