Saturday, August 15, 2026 – 8:24 AM Start
Elevation: Mt. Naeba 2,145m / Mt. Kaguragamine 2,029m / Ryunomine 2,027m
Distance: Approx. 16.7km out-and-back from the Mt. Naeba trailhead parking area
Parking: Mt. Naeba Parking Lot (Paid)
Post-Hike Hot Spring: Kaido no Yu (Approx. 20 min by car)
Post-Hike Meal: Yuzawa Butaichi
This hike took me across three peaks along the Niigata–Nagano border: Mt. Kaguragamine, Mt. Naeba, and Ryunomine.
I originally planned to start early in the morning, but rain delayed the hike.
After waiting for the weather to improve, the rain stopped around 8:00 AM and I started hiking at 8:24.
The weather gradually improved, and I even saw some blue sky along the way.
Because of the higher elevation, the temperature was also more comfortable than many of my recent summer hikes.
One of the most memorable parts of this route was the amount of water on the trail.
After the rain, some sections looked almost like streams, creating a completely different atmosphere from the mountains I had climbed before.
As I approached the summit area of Mt. Naeba, the landscape changed again.
Thick fog covered the mountain, so there were almost no distant views, but it also kept the temperature cool.
Near the summit, I entered a vast wetland area with wooden boardwalks.
Walking through the mist-covered wetlands felt almost unreal.
It was my first time experiencing this kind of mountain scenery, and even without the distant views, it became one of the highlights of the hike.
Mt. Naeba was also my first mountain above 2,000 meters since starting “Until the Summit.”
With a total distance of nearly 17km, it was also one of my longer hikes so far.
After completing Mt. Kaguragamine, Mt. Naeba, and Ryunomine and safely returning to the parking area, I could feel that I was gradually becoming stronger and more experienced.
After the hike, I stopped at Kaido no Yu for a hot spring.
Then I headed to Yuzawa Butaichi for a large pork steak meal.
The food was excellent, the portions were generous, and the staff were incredibly kind.
It is definitely somewhere I would like to visit again.
Rain, flowing trails, my first 2,000-meter mountain, misty wetlands, wooden boardwalks, and nearly 17km of hiking.
Even without the clear mountain views I had hoped for, this trip gave me experiences I had never had before.
The long-distance Obon trip was absolutely worth it.
