In Episode 8 of Lessons From a Reluctant Entrepreneur, I share how unprecedented growth nearly overwhelmed our young company. Before we had established lines of credit or meaningful cash reserves, every machine we sold generated orders for three more. Demand was soaring, but our growth was exceeding our organic cash flow. Requiring a 50 percent down payment gave us the cash needed to build each machine and helped save the company. But after the crisis faded, so did our commitment to the lesson it had taught us. Our obsession with gaining market share and losing no orders led us to make exceptions, relax our payment terms, and eventually abandon one of the fundamentals that had protected us. The larger lesson isn’t simply about collecting deposits. It’s about remembering the disciplines we establish during difficult times. Crisis creates clarity, but comfort can erase it. A business lesson isn’t truly learned because it helped you survive once. It’s learned when it continues to guide your decisions long after the fear and urgency have passed. Lessons From a Reluctant Entrepreneur is based on stories from my book, The Reluctant Entrepreneur: Anatomy of a Business Start-Up, From Uncertainty to Unstoppable.
