Super Mario Sunshine, the second game in the 3D Mario subseries of games and successor to the groundbreaking Super Mario 64, was developed and published by Nintendo in 2002 exclusively for the Gamecube. As a successor to Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine share many of the same gameplay elements from its predecessor, with the main difference between the two being that Sunshine introduces a brand new mechanic that completely changes both platform traversal and combat through F.L.U.D.D. F.L.U.D.D. (Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device) is a wearable pressure washer that Mario must use to traverse the game's setting, Isle Delfino, to clean up the island's rampant pollution problem while also trying to rescue Princess Peach from a new threat, Shadow Mario. Super Mario Sunshine begins with Mario, Peach, and members of the Mushroom Kingdom traveling to Isle Delfino for a much needed vacation. However once Mario lands on the island he is arrested by the locals as he has been framed for polluting the island, creating multiple environmental disasters that have made the island ugly and dangerous. As punishment, Mario is tasked with cleaning up the entire island himself. However his issues don't stop there as Shadow Mario, the true culprit of the island's pollution problem, has taken advantage of Mario's incarceration to abduct Princess Peach. Mario, armed with F.L.U.U.D., must now travel all across Isle Delfino to collect Shine Sprites, clean all the graffiti that litters the island, and catch Shadow Mario to save Princess Peach and clear his name in the process.
