What happens when Beethoven’s four-note motto enters Holst’s uneven march? This newly composed orchestral what-if follows the clash from C minor into a bright C-major coda. Chapters 0:00 Exposition I 0:42 Second theme 1:28 Development 2:16 Recapitulation 2:59 Coda The story Holst began Mars in 1914, before the outbreak of the First World War. Its persistent five-beat pulse unsettles the regular tread of a march. This reimagining sets that pulse against the G–G–G–E-flat motto of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. The borrowed ideas enter a newly composed sonata-style movement: exposition, development, recapitulation and coda. It is a modern musical what-if, not a lost work by Beethoven. Our vision & contribution A familiar motif can lead into unfamiliar music: here a five-beat march becomes a symphonic argument between insistence, lyricism and release. We composed and arranged a five-section movement around Holst’s Mars material and Beethoven’s four-note motto, and programmed over 4,600 score events. We developed and checked the music with our custom-made scripts and programmed its digital performance in SC. We created the visual presentation and video edit using AI-generated artwork. About the music Borrowed material: Mars, the Bringer of War from The Planets, Gustav Holst (1874–1934), and the opening motto of Symphony No. 5, Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827), both public domain. New composition, arrangement and programmed digital performance: Synth Philharmonic. This is an imagined new work, not an authentic composition by Beethoven.
