The Tribunals Reforms Act, 2026, marks an important step towards strengthening India’s tribunal system and making it more independent, transparent, efficient and accountable. The Act seeks to address longstanding concerns regarding appointments, tenure, administration and executive influence over tribunals, while giving effect to the principles laid down by the Supreme Court in its jurisprudence on tribunal independence. A key feature of the Act is the National Tribunals Commission or NTC) which provides a permanent institutional framework for the selection, performance review and oversight of tribunal members. It also represents a shift from a fragmented and largely executive-driven framework towards a more structured and institutionally independent system, while retaining mechanisms of public and parliamentary accountability.
