Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is the largest art museum in the western United States, with a collection of over 150,000 works spanning 6,000 years. LACMA, founded in 1965, evolved from the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science, and Art, established in 1910 in Exposition Park. Initially sharing space with natural history exhibits, LACMA became an independent art museum under the leadership of William A. H. Pereira, who designed its original Wilshire Boulevard campus. Iconic works include Chris Burden’s Urban Light (2008) & Metropolis II (2011), a 202-lamp public installation, Michael Heizer’s Levitated Mass (2012), a 340-ton boulder, and masterpieces like Diego Rivera’s Flower Day (1925), acquired in the 1920s by LACMA’s predecessor, Roy Lichtenstein’s Cold Shoulder (1963), and David Hockney’s Mulholland Drive (1980). The $720M David Geffen Galleries, designed by Peter Zumthor, replace four original buildings and are set to open in April 2026 with reimagined exhibitions, despite controversies over cost and reduced space.
