The Oraon is a name, which signifies someone who has taken a loan from a rich man. The Oraons know themselves as Kurukh. They are an important Dravidian tribe of the Chota Nagpur plateau. Ancient history and hypothesis say that they once lived peacefully with other people of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa until the Aryan Invasion. Their migration from Baluchistan in Sind initially ended with their settlement at the Rohtasgarh fort in Bihar. Their king was Raja Harishchandra. With frequent famines and with the increasing oppression of the money lenders the poor tribal men fled with the hope to get work in the growing tea gardens near Assam and Darjeeling. Working as Coolie in tea plantations did change their cultural expression and had an influence on their ethnicity.
