Twenty American states now have economies larger than those of many entire countries — but economic size alone doesn’t mean they could survive as independent nations.
So if every state suddenly had to stand on its own, which one actually has the geography, resources, industry and infrastructure to make it?
The United States contains some of the most powerful regional economies on Earth. States such as California, Texas, New York and Florida generate enormous amounts of wealth — enough to rival major countries.
But GDP is only part of the story.
To truly stand alone, a state would need much more: energy, food, water, industry, transportation, ports, natural resources, infrastructure, population and access to trade.
In this video, we examine 20 of America’s biggest state economies and ask a completely different question:
Which of them could actually function as an independent country?
Some have extraordinary wealth but depend heavily on resources from elsewhere. Others produce huge amounts of food or energy but lack something equally important. And once geography enters the equation, the list starts shrinking remarkably quickly.
Until eventually, one state stands apart.
This is not simply about which state is richest.
It’s about which state has the complete geographic and economic package needed to stand alone.
