The Hunters who Conserve: How a Kerala cyber community is protecting indigenous mango trees

There is a 60,000-strong cyber community in Kerala that works on the ground to identify, conserve and promote varieties of mango that are indigenous to the land. Thanks to them, hundreds of unique mango varieties not found anywhere else in the world have been identified and conserved over the years. Once a unique mango tree is found, they identify whether it is monoembryonic or polyembryonic and take necessary action to ensure they are propagated across Kerala. Thus, at least 50 unique mangoes, that would have gone forever over time, have been identified and planted across Kerala. Every "mango season", they tour across Kerala in search of new mango trees, braving the harsh Kerala summer and unwelcoming hosts. Nothing ever detracts the "Mango Hunters" from these trips.
