The Indian rupee is facing intense pressure as the Middle East conflict threatens global energy markets, pushes up oil prices and raises fresh concerns about imported inflation. With the rupee trading near the ₹97-per-dollar mark, the Reserve Bank of India’s currency-management strategy is under scrutiny.
In this special report, we examine the growing connection between the Middle East energy shock, the RBI’s foreign-exchange interventions and the financial pressure facing India’s economy.
THE WORLD BANK’S WARNING: 30–40 COUNTRIES IN TALKS
The World Bank is reportedly in discussions with 30–40 countries over potential crisis assistance to deal with energy price increases linked to the Middle East conflict. World Bank President Ajay Banga has highlighted the pressure from rising diesel and fertilizer prices, particularly on developing economies.
The Bank has discussed an initial $25 billion crisis-funding window, with another $35 billion potentially available through the reallocation of resources from already approved projects. If conditions deteriorate, the broader funding response could potentially reach $100 billion.
What does this mean for the global economy—and could India face additional pressure from a prolonged energy crisis?
RBI’S ₹97 DEFENCE: WHAT IS AT STAKE?
Abhishek Upadhyay of ICICI Securities Primary Dealership has described ₹97 per US dollar as the RBI’s apparent “line in the sand.” This is an expert’s assessment of the central bank’s actions, not a formally confirmed exchange-rate guarantee by the RBI.
The central bank has intervened to contain excessive volatility and has introduced measures aimed at curbing speculative activity in the foreign-exchange market.
But defending the rupee is not without costs. Currency intervention, foreign-exchange reserves, global capital flows, crude oil prices and US dollar strength all matter.
HOW DOES A WEAK RUPEE AFFECT YOU?
A weaker rupee can make imported goods and overseas expenses more expensive. The effects can reach ordinary Indians through several channels:
Petrol and diesel: Higher crude oil prices and a weaker rupee can increase import costs, although domestic fuel prices also depend on taxes, pricing decisions and other factors.
Inflation: More expensive imports can add to price pressures across the economy.
Overseas education and travel: Dollar-denominated tuition fees, accommodation and travel expenses can rise in rupee terms.
Households and businesses: Imported electronics, industrial inputs and other goods may become more expensive.
Farmers and food prices: Fertilizer costs and energy-intensive supply chains can affect agricultural production costs.
RBI intervention may help limit excessive currency volatility and imported inflation. However, it cannot guarantee a particular exchange rate or prevent every price increase.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The rupee’s exchange rate is not just a financial-market number. It affects the cost of imports, overseas spending and the wider inflation outlook. At the same time, the World Bank’s talks with dozens of countries underline the international economic risks posed by a prolonged energy shock.
Can the RBI contain excessive volatility while global pressures persist? And how much of the cost could eventually reach Indian consumers?
