In 1586, letters to the imprisoned Mary, Queen of Scots were travelling in and out of Chartley Hall hidden inside beer barrels. Mary believed they were secret. Every one of them was being opened, copied and deciphered in London by Elizabeth I's government. When the right letter came through, the decoder drew a small gallows on it. This is the entire history of Elizabeth I's secret service: Sir Francis Walsingham and his house in Seething Lane, the codebreaker Thomas Phelippes, the Ridolfi and Throckmorton plots, the Bond of Association, the beer-barrel post, the Babington Plot and its forged postscript, the execution of Mary at Fotheringhay, the spy in Florence who counted the Armada's ships, the Privy Council letter that may make Christopher Marlowe a government agent, and the secret letters that brought James VI to the English throne. Disputed points are flagged as disputed. Sources include: The National Archives (SP 53/18, the 'Gallows Letter' copy and Phelippes's forged postscript); British Library; Stephen Alford, The Watchers and All His Spies; John Cooper, The Queen's Agent; Lasry, Biermann and Tomokiyo, Cryptologia (2023); Privy Council letter to Cambridge, 29 June 1587; Hatfield House (the Rainbow Portrait); NSA Center for Cryptologic History, 'To Catch a Queen'.
