Do not miss this free historic park in Shanghai. Guangfulin Cultural Relics Park often called the "Root of Shanghai," is an archaeological park with over 5,000 years to see where modern Shanghai's civilization first began. The absolute showstopper here is the underwater museum—three massive triangular rooftops floating on a lake, while the main exhibition halls sit 6 meters below the water's surface. It's an architectural illusion you won't find anywhere else. Wander through Hui-style whitewashed alleyways at Jixianfang, “ruins” near the river, large temple with old bonsai, striking red-and-gold Beijing-style buildings, and climb the late-Tang dynasty–inspired Fulin Pagoda for sweeping panoramic views. Close to the park you can also explore the huge “ship” building and large camping-style cafe. There is also an old hotel with a Michelin recommended restaurant and afternoon tea.
