1963 Studebaker Avanti: America's Most Advanced Production Car & Studebaker's Last Gasp I have to say, this is one of the most remarkable engineering and design stories in American automotive history. In 1961, Raymond Loewy assembled a team of four designers in a rented house in Palm Springs and delivered a finished car design in forty days. The result was the Avanti, the first American production car with standard front disc brakes, a fiberglass body, and an engine that broke 29 speed records at Bonneville in a single twelve-hour session.
