Lasko has always been an interesting company in the way that they will transition through models as time progresses. This fan has most of the characteristics of the 1999-2000 model; the knob, motor braces, I believe the cabinet is identical. But where this fan differs is the motor, it has the smaller PSC motor that would be recalled later. It also has the newer style back grille. Performance is quite good, though I suspect the capacitor has drifted a little bit because of the recalled fans I've tested it's on the weaker side. I believe these to be some of the last good quality fans you could buy that were powerful, relatively quiet, and while built down to a cost, they seem to still be made adequately enough to still be around even 26 years later.
Personally I think that these 'recalled' fans are about as safe as any other fan of the era as long as you keep them cleaned and maintained. While it is horrible that incidents occurred, it's not even definite that the fans caused the problems listed in the recall, as the CPSC describes that: "Lasko has received 42 reports of fires possibly associated with motor failures". I think that with any fan you should use it when you can monitor it, like any other appliance. It's interesting to note that this fan WOULD be affected by the 2006 recall (January 1999-June 2001, which poses another question because nothing (to my knowledge) changed in June of 2001) but is NOT affected by the recall in 2011 (2002-03, 2003-04).
The 2006 recall affected "about 5.6 million units", with 42 reports are listed as "possibly associated with motor failures" (0.00075%). The 2011 recall affected "about 4.8 million units" with 7 reports, one of which being a barn fire (0.000145833%).
