“Endless answers” follows a search for understanding. Through the words of Elihu in the Book of Iyov (Job), we turn to the source of understanding itself: “אכן רוח היא באנוש ונשמת ה׳ תבינם” “There is a spirit in man, & the breath of the Almighty gives them understanding.” — Iyov 32:8 Elihu teaches that wisdom does not come through age and experience alone. Our ability to understand is a gift from Hashem. Next, he speaks of that same Divine breath giving him life, and describes himself as formed from clay. The clay is our physical body. The flame expresses the soul’s longing for its source. Tanya compares the soul to a candle whose flame continually reaches upward, and teaches that our hidden love for Hashem is an inheritance from the Avos. Which connects to Avraham Avinu, who questioned the world around him and came to recognize Hashem. The Arizal reveals the connection between Avraham & Iyov. Sha’ar HaGilgulim identifies Iyov as a gilgul—a return of the soul—of Terach, Avraham’s father. Avraham helped bring his father toward teshuvah, & Iyov’s life continued that soul’s tikkun: its process of spiritual repair. Sha’ar HaPesukim finds Avram’s name hidden in the words describing Iyov’s suffering: the first letters of “איוב בשחין רע מכף” spell אברם. Within this teaching, the soul’s journey reaches beyond a single lifetime. What a person can see & remember is only part of that journey. “Endless answers” holds this together with the simple human experience of asking, waiting, and learning to trust. We keep seeking understanding while recognizing the limits of what we can know. Reb Nachman of Breslov explains that Hashem’s greatness has no limit. Every level reveals how much more lies beyond us. “תכלית הידיעה אשר לא נדע” “The ultimate end of knowledge is to know that we do not know.”— Sichot HaRan 3 Iyov 32–33; Tanya 18–19; Sha’ar HaGilgulim, introduction 15; Sha’ar HaPesukim, Iyov 1–2. - Lyrics I crossed deserts of questions With dust upon my feet I followed distant lanterns Through every winding street I climbed the towers of reason I searched the ancient skies I gathered fragments of wisdom From every voice & every guide The scholars drew their maps The dreamers named the stars The poets filled the heavens With stories from afar And still beyond the horizon A mystery remained Calling my name Calling my name I’ve sailed oceans of wonder I’ve marched through kingdoms of why I’ve chased the edge of knowing Beneath an endless sky I thought beyond the mountain The final truth would wait But every road was leading To a different kind of gate So I stood among the seekers And listened through the years To triumphs & to failures To certainties & fears I watched the mighty arguments Rise & disappear Like castles built of sand Beside the sea Some swore they held the answer Some claimed they’d seen the end Yet every perfect certainty Would someday have to bend & as the night grew deeper The silence grew immense Until the silence itself Began to speak So i waited Like the dawn behind the mountains Like the tide before the shore While the world kept searching For what it couldn’t know For the moment that silence had more to say Then all the words before it Could ever hope to say Then something started rising Like thunder underground Like rivers beneath stone Searching for a sound Like wine within a vessel Like fire beneath the earth What had long been hidden Pressed toward birth The gates were shaking The walls were trembling The river sought the sea The words were no longer mine They were moving through me I’m full of words Full of wonder Full of questions still untold Like a river seeking daylight Like a flame refusing cold I can feel them rising I can hear them at the door I’m full of words And I can’t hold them anymore Then came a deeper knowing Older than the stars Wisdom is not measured By crowns or scars Not every aged mountain Holds the highest view Not every ancient pathway Leads you through For there is something hidden Within the heart of man A breath beyond all breathing A fire no hand can command רוח היא באנוש A flame beneath the clay ונשמת ה׳ תבינם The breath that lights the way Not by power Not by riches Not by all the years we’ve known Every soul can hear the music Of the King upon the throne רוח היא באנוש Across the seas Across the skies ונשמת ה׳ תבינם The spark that never dies And suddenly I understood The thing I’d failed to see The mystery was never locked The lock was only me I searched for final answers For a place where questions cease Yet every road of certainty Had stolen wonder’s peace The ocean keeps its secrets The stars refuse to bow And maybe all true wisdom Begins exactly now תכלית הידיעה אשר לא נדע The beginning of wisdom The beginning of sight Not standing above the mystery But standing in its light & when the final answer failed & every voice was done A different journey started A different song begun
