The paperwork is the part of moving abroad nobody warns you about — the FBI background check, the apostilles, the notarizations, and the surprises that almost derailed us. So in Part 4 of our Panama residency journey, we're walking you through exactly what we needed, in what order, and the three surprises we did NOT see coming — so they don't blindside you. 🇵🇦
We're a three-generation family — Yaya, Mama, and Nova-Rose — sharing the real, honest steps of moving abroad and living as a multigenerational family.
⚠️ Quick note: we're not lawyers, and this is just our experience — always consult your own attorney and follow their guidance.

📋 OUR DOCUMENT CHECKLIST (start these EARLY)
Passports — every traveler, all generations
Birth certificate — especially for children
FBI background check (Identity History Summary Check) — each adult; kids don't need fingerprints
Financial proof — a bank letter showing your average balance over the past year
Taxes — your last 2 years (file early!)
Custody/authorization — sole-custody documents OR an authorization letter from the other parent (essential for establishing residency abroad with a child)
Social Security letter — notarized
Court documents — notarized with the court's gold seal
Apostilles + notarizations as required by your attorney
Pet paperwork — vet certificate → USDA endorsement → consulate certification → airport check
⏳ Tip: keep everything dated within 6 months — the FBI check is only valid ~6 months (we had to redo ours!).
