in 1995 the late Pope Saint John Paul II ( Karol Józef Wojtyła ) visited this gargantuan Cathedral , performing an evening prayer that earned the Cathedral the rank of Basilica.
Step with me inside of the most breathtaking architectural masterpieces in the United States: the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, New Jersey.
As the fifth-largest cathedral in North America, this French Gothic Revival giant took over 55 years to build (1899–1954) and rivals European landmarks in both scale and beauty. Located on Newark’s highest point overlooking Branch Brook Park, the cathedral features 232-foot twin towers, hand-carved stone and marble interiors, and a massive 9,513-pipe Schantz organ. Its iconic 36-foot rose window is the largest of its kind in any Catholic church in the Western Hemisphere!
