Grade 9 · Chemistry · Chapter 8: Journey Inside the Atom
Topic: Rutherford's gold-foil experiment and the nuclear atom
Aligned to the CBSE Class 9 syllabus.
Can a bullet bounce off tissue paper? In 1909, something just like that happened inside a lab. 🤔
Rutherford's team fired tiny alpha particles at a sheet of gold thinner than a thousandth of a millimetre. Most went straight through. A few turned. And about 1 in 20,000 bounced straight back! From this, Rutherford found that an atom is mostly empty space, with a tiny, heavy, positive centre: the nucleus.
In this video you will see every model in 3D, and then the same drawing you make in your notebook (2D view).
What you will learn:
✅ Thomson's plum-cake model (1904)
✅ What an alpha particle is
✅ The gold-foil experiment (Geiger and Marsden, 1909)
✅ What they saw, and what each result means
✅ Rutherford's model of the atom (1911)
✅ How small the nucleus is: a mustard seed in a cricket stadium
✅ Let's solve one together: observations and conclusions
✅ 3 common mistakes, and the problem Bohr fixed
✅ A quick 4-question quiz at the end
